DEM-based algorithm for simulation of rocking developed

The first DEM-based algorithm available to simulate rocking of a single rectangular block on a base is developed in Matlab. The first version of the code includes only normal contact between the bodies, while tangential contact will be added later.

The normal contact is modeled as:

  • Undamped linear spring model,
  • Damped linear spring model ,
  • Undamped Hertzian model,
  • Damped Hertzian model.

First series of experiments conducted

The first series of experiments planed in the experimental program was designed and prepared. The experiments for “vertical” collisions were conducted between Sep 10 and Sep 15 2019.

Experimental set-up (high-speed camera, LED lights, aluminum rocking block and base)
Samples on three scales (sizes) with speckle pattern prepared for DIC measurements
